Makoto Itoh

Makoto Itoh (1936-2023) was a Japanese economist regarded internationally as one of the most important scholars of Karl Marx theory of value. Trained in the school of political economy founded by Kozo Uno, he was one of few Japanese Marxian economists to publish extensively in English language journals such as Science and Society, Monthly Review, Capital and Class and New Left Review. He wrote 24 books, including Value and Crisis (1980), The Basic Theory of Capitalism (1987) and Political Economy for Socialism (1995), and taught at Kokugakuin University before becoming professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo.
