Jyoti Basu was an Indian Marxist theorist, communist activist and politician, and one of the most prominent leaders of the communist movement in India. A founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he sat on its Politburo from its formation in 1964 until 2008 and served as Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, the longest tenure of any elected chief minister in India at the time of his resignation. He declined the post of Prime Minister after the 1996 general election when his party would not let him head a multi-party coalition that could implement Marxist programs, relinquishing the position to Deve Gowda.
