Alfred Klahr

Alfred Klahr (1904-1944) was an Austrian communist politician, journalist and historian, a leading Marxist theorist who argued in a 1937 series of articles, Zur nationalen Frage in Osterreich, that the Austrian people had lived under different economic and political conditions from other Germans and had developed their own national trajectory, laying the theoretical basis for a distinct Austrian nation. Active in the Austrian resistance to Nazism from 1938, he was imprisoned at Auschwitz from 1942, escaped in June 1944, and was shot by SS forces soon after in Nazi-occupied Warsaw.
