Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) was a German philosopher and social and political theorist best known for his lifelong collaboration with Karl Marx. Together they co-authored The Communist Manifesto in 1848 and developed the body of social and political thought known as Marxism, including its account of class structure and historical change. After Marx died, Engels edited and completed the second and third volumes of Das Kapital. This entity covers his sociological theorist facet as co-founder of historical materialism.
