Clara Wichmann

Clara Wichmann (1885-1922) was a German-Dutch lawyer and anarchist feminist activist, born in Hamburg and based in the Netherlands, who became a leading advocate for criminal justice reform and prison abolition, arguing in her 1912 doctoral thesis for the abolition of prisons and punitive justice as what she called a mark of backwardness, coarseness, shallowness and harshness. She co-founded the Dutch Society for Womens Suffrage in 1908, established the Committee of Action against existing views on Crime and Punishment in 1919, and co-founded the Union of Religious Anarcho-Communists in 1920, publishing widely on criminal reform and syndicalism.
