Joseph Déjacque

Joseph Dejacque (1821-1865) was a French political journalist and poet, a house painter by trade who taught himself to write poetry and became active in the French labour movement in the 1840s. Radicalized toward anarchism after fighting on the barricades in the 1848 June Days uprising and enduring imprisonment and exile, he later founded Le Libertaire, the first non-English-language anarchist newspaper in the United States, and is remembered as an early forerunner of anarchist communism and for coining the political sense of the word libertarian.
