Frithjof Bergmann

Frithjof Bergmann (1930-2021) was a German-American philosopher who taught at the University of Michigan, specializing in existentialism, continental philosophy, Hegel and Marx. He is known for the concept of New Work, proposing that labor be reorganized into three roughly equal parts: paid employment, self-sufficient production aided by technology, and work aligned with a persons own passions. His book On Being Free (1977) argued that freedom requires a coherent self with authentic desires, and he is credited as one of the creators of the teach-in, a protest format first used at the University of Michigan in March 1965.
