Karl Kautsky

Karl Kautsky was an Austrian-born Marxist theorist who became the leading intellectual voice of orthodox Marxism after the death of Friedrich Engels in 1895. For decades he served as the leading theorist of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and of the Second International, earning the nickname the Pope of Marxism for the authority his interpretations carried until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. His influence reached beyond Germany into the Russian Empire, where figures including Vladimir Lenin treated him as the leading authority on Marxist theory.
