Nestor Makhno

Nestor Makhno was a Ukrainian anarchist revolutionary, also known as Bat'ko Makhno, who commanded the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the Ukrainian War of Independence. He established the Makhnovshchina, a mass peasant movement that put anarchist communist ideas into practice across large areas of southern Ukraine between 1918 and 1921, centered on his home province of Katerynoslav. His attempt to build a stateless, self-organized peasant society has continued to serve as a practical reference point for later anarchist thought.
