Basil Bernstein was a British sociologist and linguist who developed an influential theory of the relationship between social class, language, and educational achievement. He distinguished between an elaborated code, a linguistic style using explicit, context-independent language associated with middle-class socialization, and a restricted code, a more context-dependent, implicit style he associated with working-class speech communities, arguing that schools operate predominantly through the elaborated code and so systematically advantage children already socialized into it at home. Bernstein's code theory, developed across decades of empirical and theoretical work summarized in his multi-volume Class, Codes and Control, became a foundational and much-debated contribution to the sociology of education's account of how schooling can reproduce rather than reduce class inequality.
