Rajput

Rajput denotes a large cluster of warrior-aristocratic clans of northern and western India, historically ruling numerous regional kingdoms across Rajasthan and neighboring areas from roughly the seventh century onward, and claiming Kshatriya varna status. Rajput clan organization is genealogical, tracing descent through named lineages (such as the Sisodia, Rathore and Chauhan clans) each with its own historical ruling house, and Rajput identity remains closely tied to regional Rajasthani cultural memory, including a well-documented martial and honor-code tradition. The historical process by which various regional lineages achieved or consolidated Rajput status over centuries is a documented subject of South Asian historical scholarship rather than a single fixed origin.
