Tibetan people

Tibetans are the indigenous people of the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau, historically organized around Tibetan Buddhist monastic institutions that combined religious and, for periods of Tibetan history, political authority, most notably under the Dalai Lama lineage. Tibetan society traditionally combined settled barley agriculture in river valleys with high-altitude yak and sheep pastoralism, and Tibetan Buddhist monastic culture produced an extensive documented literary, philosophical and artistic tradition. Since the People's Republic of China's 1950-51 incorporation of Tibet and the 1959 uprising and subsequent exile of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, the political status of Tibet and the condition of Tibetan cultural and religious practice under Chinese administration have remained a genuinely and extensively documented international human-rights and diplomatic subject.
