Apache Sunrise Ceremony

Life-cycle Ritual Practice

The Apache Sunrise Ceremony, known in the Western Apache language as Na'ii'ees, is a four-day puberty rite held for a girl shortly after her first menstruation, marking her transition into womanhood and her ritual identification with White Painted Woman, the culture-heroine figure central to Apache origin narratives. Over the four days the girl undergoes physically demanding ritual actions, including extended dancing to drumming and singing led by a medicine man, that are understood to shape her health, temperament, and capacities for the rest of her life, while she is painted, blessed with pollen, and treated by the community as possessing the healing and blessing power of White Painted Woman herself. Sponsored by the girl's family with the help of a godparent and requiring extensive preparation, including construction of a ceremonial tepee, the ceremony remains an actively practiced and important marker of Apache cultural continuity among the Western Apache and related Apache communities in the American Southwest today.
