Chisungu

Life-cycle Ritual Practice

Chisungu is a female initiation ceremony of the Bemba people of what is now Zambia, traditionally performed for a girl at first menstruation or in preparation for marriage, and it became one of the best-documented initiation rites in the anthropological record through Audrey Richards's 1956 ethnography Chisungu: A Girl's Initiation Ceremony among the Bemba of Northern Rhodesia. The ceremony extends over many days and involves the girl's seclusion, instruction by older women in adult female roles and sexual knowledge, and a long sequence of songs and symbolic acts performed around modeled clay emblems and pottery figures that dramatize proper womanhood, motherhood, and the dangers a young wife must learn to avoid. Richards read the ceremony through a structural-functionalist lens as a mechanism for transmitting Bemba matrilineal values and reinforcing the girl's new social status, and Chisungu remains a standard reference case in the anthropological literature on female initiation and the sociology of ritual symbolism.
