Orphan

An orphan is a child whose parents have died, are unknown, or have permanently abandoned them, defined by one dictionary as a person deprived by death of a father or mother or, more usually, of both. In common usage only a child who has lost both parents to death is generally called an orphan, though some languages use a broader and more ambiguous term covering death, an unknown parent or abandonment alike. When the word is applied to animals only the mother status is usually considered relevant, so an offspring is termed an orphan if the female parent is gone regardless of the father condition.
