Niece and nephew

In the lineal kinship system used in English-speaking cultures, a niece or nephew is the child of a person sibling or sibling-in-law, with a niece female and a nephew male, and the gender-neutral term nibling used in some specialist literature in place of either. A niece or nephew addresses their parent sibling as aunt or uncle, and because the two generations are separated by one step the relationship counts as second-degree, carrying at least twenty-five percent shared blood when the aunt or uncle is a full sibling of the parent, or 12.5 percent when they are a half-sibling.
