Morganatic Marriage

A morganatic marriage, sometimes called a left-handed marriage, is a marriage between people of unequal social rank that, in the context of royalty or another inherited title, prevents the higher-ranking spouse's position or privileges from passing to the other spouse or to any children of the marriage. The institution is most closely associated with German-speaking territories and with the countries most influenced by German-speaking dynastic custom, where it allowed a noble to marry for personal reasons without disturbing the line of succession or inheritance.
