Father

A father is the male parent of a child, and besides any biological bond a father may hold a parental, legal and social relationship to his child that carries its own rights and obligations. A biological father is the male genetic contributor to a child, whether through intercourse or sperm donation, while a putative father is one whose biological link is alleged but not established. A stepfather is a non-biological male parent married to a child parent who joins the family unit without automatically holding a parent legal rights, and an adoptive father becomes a child legal parent through the process of adoption. The adjective paternal describes this relationship, set against maternal for a mother, and informal terms for the role include dad, daddy, papa and pop.
