Emancipation of Minors

Emancipation of minors is a legal mechanism by which a minor, before reaching the age of majority, is freed from the control of their parents or guardians, who are in turn freed from responsibility for the minor. Minors are ordinarily presumed legally incompetent to enter into contracts or manage their own affairs, and emancipation overrides that presumption, allowing an emancipated minor to make certain decisions on their own legal behalf that would otherwise require a parent or guardian's consent.
