Disownment

Disownment occurs when a parent, sibling, or relative renounces or no longer accepts a child or relative as a family member, sometimes because of actions perceived as reprehensible, and it can carry severe emotional consequences. It is distinct from giving a child up for adoption in that it is a social and interpersonal act that may take place later in the childs life, carrying no responsibility for future care, so the disowned person must find another home and means of care, similar in that respect to divorce or repudiation.
