Consummation

The consummation of a marriage is the first officially recognized act of sexual intercourse following the wedding, defined in many legal and religious traditions as penile-vaginal penetration, with some religious doctrines additionally barring contraception during that act. Its religious, cultural or legal significance rests on the idea that marriage exists to produce legally recognized descendants, to sanction the couple sexual union, or both, so an unconsummated marriage can be treated as incomplete or, in some legal systems, annulled on that basis. Consummation also matters for common-law marriage, and its historical importance gave rise to various bedding rituals. The term is also used informally to describe a sexual milestone in relationships of many kinds and durations.
