Child support is an ongoing, periodic payment made by a parent for the financial benefit of a child after the end of a marriage or similar relationship. Court-ordered child maintenance runs from an obligor, typically a non-custodial parent, to an obligee such as a custodial parent, caregiver, or guardian, to cover the child's care and upbringing. The obligation can apply even where the parents' relationship was never formalized as a marriage.
