Social Register

Stratification Systems

The Social Register is a semi-annual publication in the United States that indexes the members of American high society. It was first published in the 1880s by the newspaper columnist Louis Keller, later passed to the ownership of Malcolm Forbes, and since 2014 has been owned by Christopher Wolf. As a standing registry of an inherited social elite, it functions as a stratification institution in its own right, formally marking membership in an upper social stratum rather than merely reporting on it.
