Militia System

Political and Legal Institutions

A militia is a military or paramilitary force composed of civilian members, as distinct from a professional standing army of regular, full-time military personnel. As an institution, a militia system raises such forces in times of need to support regular troops, or maintains them as a pool of available manpower for regular forces to draw from. Associated With

Militia systems have historically been organized and called up under the authority of local or national government, from the colonial American militia to Switzerland's citizen-army today.

The militia system, a citizen force mobilized for defense, is conventionally contrasted with and historically preceded the standing army as an alternative institutional model for organizing a state's armed forces.
