Junta

Political and Legal Institutions

A junta, more fully a military junta, is a system of government led by a committee of military leaders. The term junta means meeting or committee and originated with the national and local juntas organized by the Spanish resistance to Napoleon's invasion of Spain; it is now used to describe an authoritarian government characterized by a politically dominant group of military officers. Military juntas function as a specific institutional form of oligarchy, concentrating political authority in a small group of ranking officers rather than a single ruler or broad electorate.

A junta is a ruling council typically composed of, and dependent for its authority on, the officer corps of a standing army, most documented in twentieth-century Latin American and other military coups.
