National Bank of Rwanda

The National Bank of Rwanda is Rwanda's central bank, founded in 1964 and headquartered on KN6 Avenue in Kigali's central business district. It sets monetary policy, issues the Rwandan franc, and is wholly owned by the state. The bank grew out of a complicated colonial monetary history spanning Belgian, German and French influence before independence, and it took its present form only after 1964. Soraya Hakuziyaremye became governor in 2025, succeeding John Rwangombwa, who had led the bank since 2013. As of mid 2022 the bank held foreign reserves of about 1.9 billion US dollars. It is an active member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion and was among seventeen founding regulatory institutions that made commitments to expand access to banking and financial services under the Maya Declaration at the 2011 Global Policy Forum held in Mexico.
