Central Bank of Djibouti

Economic Institutions

The Central Bank of Djibouti is the country's monetary authority, established by decree 79030 on April 18, 1979, and headquartered in Djibouti City. Known in French as the Banque Centrale de Djibouti, it issues the Djiboutian franc, oversees the country's foreign exchange reserves, regulates financial institutions, works to promote financial stability, and helps detect financial crime. The bank is entirely state owned and operates under direct government oversight. Abdi Mohamed Luc Aden led the bank from 1979 to 1991, followed by Djama Mahamoud Haid from 1991 to 2013, and Ahmed Osman Ali has served as governor since 2013. Reported foreign exchange reserves stand at roughly 350 million US dollars. The bank maintains its own website at banque-centrale.dj and conducts its official business in French, reflecting Djibouti's history as a French colonial territory.
