All American Anthropologists

Anthropologists of the United States, the tradition that grew from the work of Franz Boas into the study of culture, language, prehistory and human variation, with long fieldwork among Native American, Pacific, Caribbean and Latin American peoples. A theorist belongs here when the cited article calls the person American, including those born abroad who worked in the United States. It excludes the American anthropologists placed with the symbolic, ecological and materialist or critical schools. Their writing runs from cultural relativism and studies of culture and personality to feminist ethnography, the anthropology of food and the study of kinship.
